History

Virginia Preparatory School opened its doors for the first time on 21 January 1958 with 102 pupils. Since then the number on the roll has increased to 474. The school caters for children from Grade 4 to Grade 7 and traditionally serves the communities of Glenashley, Virginia, La Lucia, Glenhills, Glen Anil and Sunningdale.

Structure

At present there are 5 classes in each grade except for Grade 6 which has 4 classes. The average class size is 25. There are 26 academic staff, 4 secretaries and 8 support staff, all of whom are committed to making Virginia the primary school of choice in Durban North.

Classroom Environment

As of January 2007 each classroom also has a whiteboard, a computer with an email address and linked to the internet by wireless network. They also have extra storage space in the form of pigeonholes and a TV monitor linked to the school DSTV network. Each classroom has large aluminium windows and a sliding door which has helped to create a comfortable, relaxed learning environment.

 


Location

From the M4 (Ruth First Highway), one takes the Virginia off-ramp (opposite Virginia Airport). Halfway around the circle, proceed up Hinton Grove (+/- 200m) and turn right into Margaret Maytom Avenue. The school is situated on the left with magnificent views of the ocean.
